Is Damascus Steel from Syria?

Damascus steel is a type of steel characterised by distinctive patterns, often resembling flowing water, and is known for its strength and sharpness.  It's made by forge-welding different types of steel together, creating layers that reveal unique patterns when etched. While the original methods are debated, modern Damascus steel is typically created by repeatedly folding and welding high-carbon steel and stainless steel.

While the distinctive patterns of Damascus steel were popularised through blades traded in Damascus, the capital of Syria, the steel itself did not originate there. The technique for making Damascus steel originated in ancient India and was later refined and traded through Damascus. The name "Damascus steel" arose because the city was a major trading center for the steel, not its place of origin.
